Campden –Vale

Clive Thompson

Clive Thompson stood as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Campden-Vale in the CDC elections on May 5,2011. 32% of Campden-Vale voters chose Clive, but unfortunately all 3 seats went to the Conservatives.

Clive has had 33 years experience in public service work, including current community projects – Raising the Rec,the Cotswold Olimpicks, tourism facilitation, the Safer Communities and Neighbourhood Watch schemes.
A baby boomer but with younger generations’ concerns close to his heart,Clive wants to provide a fresh voice for the hard times ahead.

Clive married Carol in 1969,they have 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren.

He retired to Chipping Campden after a career first in overseas teaching, then as a member of Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service. His overseas postings included Moscow and New York.

He is Vice Chairman of the Robert Dover’s Games Society, which stages the annual Cotswold Olimpicks. They began in 1612 so will celebrate their 400th anniversary in 2012. Lord Coe has praised the Society’s work, describing it as “fantastic”.

  • Clive is closely involved in the community campaign Raising the Rec,to uplift facilities at Chipping Campden Recreation Ground.
  • He is a member of the management committee for the Chipping Campden Information Centre,is the Neighbourhood Watch coordinator for his  area  and is involved in the Gloucestershire Police Safer Communities Programme.

Clive says,““I have no business interests to declare. Being retired I shall be able to focus on community needs.

The Conservatives have ruled unchallenged in the Campden Vale Ward since 2003. In fact it looks to me as if  the Cotswold District Council has become something of a comfort zone for the Conservative Party. Complacency may have led them to take their eyes off the ball.

Otherwise why should central government have imposed on the Conservative controlled Council just about the heaviest cuts –17% this year –on any council in the entire country? The price to be paid by all of us in the Cotswolds district is around £1 million in cutbacks for this coming year alone.
